Transition

The term used to describe the process of changing from one gender to the other; taking steps such as changing one’s name and/or medical intervention.

People can transition in many different ways and will choose what fits best with their needs. Not every trans or non-binary person wants to or can “transition”. Those that can, will often do this in very different ways. We can distinguish between a social, medical, and legal transition:

  • A social transition can include a new name, experimenting with clothing and hairstyles, using binders or other corrective garments, etc.
  • Those that medically transition might choose for medical options such as speech therapy, hormone therapy or surgeries.
  • You can also legally transition. You can for example legally change the “M” on your passport to “F” or you can officially change your first name.
