The act of adjusting one’s style of speech, appearance, behavior, and expression in ways that will optimize the comfort of others in exchange for fair treatment, quality service, and employment opportunities. Codeswitching often occurs in spaces where negative stereotypes of people run counter to what the dominant culture considers “appropriate” behavior and norms within a specific environment. Black/African Americans often engage in code-switching to appear less threatening.
